Review Jolly Phonics Pupil book 1

Jolly Phonics Pupil Book one is my favorite books from the Jolly phonics series.  It only does one thing, that is teach the 42 sounds and it does that very well.

For my youtube video review please watch here;

Each page introduces one sound and it is taught through seven phases or sets.

The first sound in phase 1 is "S".

Each page shows;

1, The letter or letters of the sound, in this case S.

2, A picture representing the sound, here it is a snake. (This can be used for coloring once the child has completed the exercises).

3, The action for the sound, for "S" it is moving your hand like a snake.

4, Writing practice.

5, A box with some words that can be made, with the sounds learned up until this point. (S is the first sound so there are no words yet).

6,  Four pictures of objects, three contain the new sound and should be circled the fourth does not and the student crosses it out. (In this case circle sun, snail and spider and cross out flower).

As we progress through the book, the second line of writing practice is for review of previously learned sounds.

You can also see words that we can spell with our sounds so far, appearing in the box on the right.

As the book continues the words and sound become increasingly complicated.  For a list of words that are possible to read and write once this system is mastered, look at my post on;

You can learn or review all of the 42 sounds with this video;

At the end of the book there are some pages for practicing writing words and blending the sounds.  The first tricky words are also introduced.

In summary I find that this is an excellent book for introducing phonic sounds and basic letter writing skills  I really like the way that it builds on the previous lessons and I have had great results both with improving my students reading ability and pronunciation using this book.
