Reading

Reading

I teach reading using phonics, sight words and leveled readers.

  • Phonics teaches the child the basic sounds in English and the letter or letters that make them.  For example "A" sound in ant or "OO"  sound in moon.
  • Sight words teach them to instantly recognize common words, whether they follow phonetic rules or not.  For example THE, IS, SAID, A,
  • Leveled readers introduce new vocabulary and increase the length of sentences as they progress, breaking up learning into easy steps

    Tips:
    • Make books a part of your child's life, English books, books in their native language, picture books.
    • Read to them as much as possible in English (if possible) and in your native language too.
    • Read signs and notices on shops and in the train, start with short single words like EXIT and sound out each sound E-X-I-T then put them together EXIT.
    • If they are watching an English DVD put on subtitles in English, they will read some words as they watch.
