Writing

Writing  For kindergarten children the first thing we need to teach is how to hold a pencil correctly, then we move on to learning to write the alphabet, and then short words. Later we start to teach sentences and punctuation and grammar becomes more important. Tips: Teach them to write their own name first. Apart from their name, I recommend teaching writing with or after basic phonics.  Start by tracing letters. Teach them to put a finger width between words. Teach them to start a sentence with a capital and finish it with a period. Main page / Directory

Reading

Reading I teach reading using phonics, sight words and leveled readers. Phonics teaches the child the basic sounds in English and the letter or letters that make them.  For example "A" sound in ant or "OO"  sound in moon. Sight words teach them to instantly recognize common words, whether they follow phonetic rules or not.  For example THE, IS, SAID, A, Leveled readers introduce new vocabulary and increase the length of sentences as they progress, breaking up learning into easy steps Tips:  Make books a part of your child's life, English books, books in their native language, picture books.   Read to them as much as possible in English (if possible) and in your native language too. Read signs and notices on shops and in the train, start with short single words like EXIT and sound out each sound E-X-I-T then put them together EXIT. If they are watching an English DVD put on subtitles in  English,  they will read some words as t...

2, Believe in yourself.  You can teach more than you think. I often hear from my students I can`t teach my children English because I can't speak English. I can`t speak French ... However I do know hello is "bonjour" Counting goes un , deux, trois, quatre... So if my children want to learn French I will teach them the 20 or so words and phrases that I know, later if they study from a French teacher or textbook I will ask them to teach me what they have learned. Most Japanese for example, know a lot more English than they realize.  If you are Japanese and are reading this I am sure you can say: My name is~ I am ~ years old. Here are three easy tips to incorporate English into your routine. 1, Breakfast:   Every morning you can turn breakfast into a 20 minute listening lesson, I recommend using CD`s or the Internet for audio only and watching videos on special occasions or weekends. 2, Transport:   Walking, bicycle, car or train every time you go out you can get in the habit of asking a couple of simple questions, for example; What day is it today?      What month is it?
