Jolly Phonics Pupil Book one is my favorite books from the Jolly phonics series.  It only does one thing, that is teach the 42 sounds and it does that very well.     For my support and answer sheet please go here. Each page shows; 1, The letter or letters of the sound, in this case S. 2, A picture representing the sound, here it is a snake. (This can be used for coloring once the child has completed the exercises). 3, The action for the sound, for "S" it is moving your hand like a snake. 4, Writing practice. 5, A box with some words that can be made, with the sounds learned up until this point. Go fish is fun game that teaches children the alphabet and some animal names.  I have been using it in my kindergarten and preschool classes for about 10 years and the children love to play it. It contains 52 playing cards the 26 letters of the alphabet in upper case (BIG) letters and the 26 letters of the alphabet in lower case (small) letters. Here is my you tube video review   Go Fish Game * Shuffle deck. *Give each player 5 cards. (don`t show the cards to each other) *First player asks any other player if they have a card, for example g  for goat.  If they do they make a set and put it down on the table in front of them self.  This is one point, they can then ask the same player or a different player if they have a different card.   * When somebody doesn`t have the card they say "Go fish".  The player then picks a card from the middle and it is the next players turn. * The goal is to make as many pairs as you can. * The game finishes

 Jolly Phonics has some excellent resources and the good news is that one of their best things is free! It is the Jolly Phonics word bank which you can download and print for free from their site HERE. This list is fantastic, looking at it you can soon understand why the Jolly Phonics system teaches from s,a,t,i,p,n rather than a,b,c,d,e,f,g because even only knowing six letters you can read and write a surprising number of words. Writing  For kindergarten children the first thing we need to teach is how to hold a pencil correctly, then we move on to learning to write the alphabet, and then short words. Later we start to teach sentences and punctuation and grammar becomes more important. Tips: Teach them to write their own name first. Apart from their name, I recommend teaching writing with or after basic phonics.  Start by tracing letters. Teach them to put a finger width between words. Teach them to start a sentence with a capital and finish it with a period. Main page / Directory

Reading I teach reading using phonics, sight words and leveled readers. Phonics teaches the child the basic sounds in English and the letter or letters that make them.  For example "A" sound in ant or "OO"  sound in moon. Sight words teach them to instantly recognize common words, whether they follow phonetic rules or not.  For example THE, IS, SAID, A, Leveled readers introduce new vocabulary and increase the length of sentences as they progress, breaking up learning into easy steps Tips:  Make books a part of your child's life, English books, books in their native language, picture books.   Read to them as much as possible in English (if possible) and in your native language too. Read signs and notices on shops and in the train, start with short single words like EXIT and sound out each sound E-X-I-T then put them together EXIT. If they are watching an English DVD put on subtitles in  English,  they will read some words as they watch.

10 TIPS TO TEACH YOUR CHILD ENGLISH  1,  Every day is best.... but it doesn`t have to be hard all you need is a routine. 2.   Believe in yourself; you can teach more than you think. 3,  There are four skills . 4 ,  Try to find English that relates to their interests/dreams. 5.   Reinforce and reward effort. (this should probably be number one). 6. Pronunciation is important, but it does not mean your child should only hear native English speakers . 7, Everybody learns at their own pace, don`t panic if your child is not top of the class. (If you panic, it will cause a negative reaction). 8,  Use a variety of resources to help educate your child. 9, Try to get them reading as much as possible . 10, Have fun!
